Jacksonville Naval Air Station was officially commissioned in 1948 as Fleet Air Jacksonville. Its history dates from 1938 when a congressional board was seeking an ideal location for a Navy base along the Eastern Seaboard. The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce lobbied extensively for the base to be located within the city. In 1939, Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill into law authorizing the aviation facility for the city. Following WWII, the Navy's Flight Demonstration Team, known as the Blue Angels, made their first home at Jacksonville NAS. In the summer of 1946, the Blue Angels gave their first public performance at a small airfield in Jacksonville.

The oldest of three Navy bases in the area, Jacksonville NAS is considered a master air and industrial base, essential to our nation's defense. The station's logo is "Service to the Fleet,". Jacksonville NAS continues to lead the aviation community, establishing it as the premier naval air station.

Medical facilities like the Naval Hospital and Branch Medical Clinic are also on base for active-duty personnel and dependants. The surrounding counties of Clay and Duval provide public and private schools for children residing on base. The Duval County School System has been recognized as the largest fully accredited school system in the nation.

Northeast Florida is an ideal locations for all kinds of leisure activity. Situated along the scenic St. Johns River, Jacksonville NAS offers breathtaking views of the river from several locations on base. Popular for fishing, the river also offers many types of water sports, such as boating and skiing. For the avid football fan, Jacksonville is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing all home games in the new Alltel stadium, a modern 73,000-seat football stadium. Baseball fans can go to Wolfson Park, next to Alltel Stadium, to see the Jacksonville Suns of the Double-A Southern League.
